Career Brief: Fleet Controller

The Fleet Controller is responsible for a company’s fleet of vehicles. This covers scheduling of drivers, trips, and maintenance and repair.

This is usually a management position, although traineeships may be offered. Good organisation and interpersonal skills are crucial, as the position is governed by set customer service, safety and quality standards.

Core Duties

  • Co-ordinate movements for a fleet of vehicles.
  • Co-ordinate drivers and off-siders, as well as loading and unloading arrangements.
  • Organise maintenance and repairs on vehicles to maintain safety and quality standards.
  • Ensure security of the fleet while the vehicles are not in use.
  • Liaise with customers, sales staff, maintenance staff or contractors, and company management.
  • Ensure costs are kept to within budgetary constraints
  • Use a computer to keep records and co-ordinate bookings.

Possible Duties

  • Vehicle purchase and disposal.
  • Leasing contract management.
  • Human Resources management such as recruitment and staff discipline.
  • Financial analysis.
  • Use technology such as radios, Global Positioning Systems, and Remote Frequency Identification.
