Heavy Combination/Semi Trailer Driver
Semi Trailer Drivers drive trucks up to 42.5 tonnes, comprising a rigid truck and a single trailer. The bulk of this work is long-distance, much of it involving deliveries interstate. This is a highly skilled occupation which involves a lot of travel. Drivers can opt to be their own bosses by buying their own rigs, setting up their own business and sub-contracting their services to large transport operators. Many Semi Trailer Drivers begin their careers driving smaller trucks, building up skills and experience before they advance to driving semi trailers.

Drive a truck and trailer up to 42 tonnes.

Manoeuvre the vehicle into position for loading and unloading and assist with unloading

Assist with loading and unloading to make sure the cargo is correctly stowed and balanced.

Calculate weight and load distribution to comply with safety regulations.

Check, update and maintain freight documents.

Plan and use the shortest delivery route considering both time and distance.

Use two-way radio and/or data screens to maintain contact with a depot or base.

Undertake some vehicle maintenance and repairs (changing tyres, checking oil and water).

Comply with long distance driving regulations, eg sleep, updating a log book, and adhering to the chain of responsibility.

Report and/or arrange for all major repairs and maintenance.

Must have a safe driving record.

May be required to work long hours – long distance driving.

May be required to undergo random drug/alcohol testing.

May be required to undergo initial psychometric (risk) testing
